Author donates royalties

Judith Carrier is Lecturer and Professional Head of Primary Care/Public Health Nursing at Cardiff University, Wales, UK, where she is responsible for practice nurse education,l and has a regular column in Practical Nursing and has written a book, Managing Long-Term Conditions and Chronic Illness in Primary Care; a guide to good practice (2009), a textbook for nursing students.

Judith visited Bwindi before her book was published and generously donates the royalties from her book to Friends of Bwindi and The Gorilla Organisation. If you buy the book from one of the shops in our Buyat 'shopping centre' (eg Amazon, or Play.com) we earn additional commission from the retailer, too!

Village fund raisers

Jenny and the people of Denton in Norfolk made the first big fund raising donations to Friends of Bwindi, enabling us to make large grants much sooner than we expected. Jenny visited Bwindi and wanted to raise funds for the community when she returned home. Friends of Bwindi was founded with people like Jenny in mind - by supporting Bwindi communities via a registered UK charitable organisation, supporters raising money from family and friends can be reassured that their donations will be monitored and used for charitable purposes.

Co-operative Life & Savings

Staff at Co-operative Life & Savings, Manchester choose three charities each year to benefit from their fund raising events. One of the fund raisers, Paul Quigley, was planning a visit to Bwindi during 2009 and Friends of Bwindi were selected as one of the three charities for the year. The colleagues undertook a variety of fund raising events, the highlight of which was a one-man theatre production!

The funds raised were split between our projects and made a big contribution to each one, enabling us to begin sponsorship of two students as well as supporting Stay Safe Children Foundation and Bwindi Hospital.

As well as the large donation made from the fund raising, we were awarded an additional grant from a Head Office charity fund. We would like to thank everyone involved - every penny was sent to Uganda where it is being used to maximum benefit of students and communities.

We are looking for sponsors to help support the students for the next few years of their education. We have a new sponsor programme that allows you to decide how much to contribute each month - find out more about our sponsored students.

You can read more about the support from the staff at Co-operative Life & Savings on our blog.

Support from children with disabilities

Fosseway School in North Somerset held a non-uniform day. Their donation was sent to Stay Safe Children Foundation, which supports vulnerable children including children with disabilities and special needs.

Sponsored triathlon

Ash did a triathlon - a demanding combination of running, cycling and swimmming - and raised sponsor money for Friends of Bwindi.

Thank you to Ash and his sponsors!

Donations

We appreciate all donations, and UK taxpayers can increase the value of their donation by making a Gift Aid declaration. It can be difficult and expensive to donate direct to Ugandan organisations when you get home, and many of our larger donations have been made by visitors from around the world returning from Bwindi. We can accept online donations of any amount, and in any currency.

Thank you to everyone who has made a donation to Friends of Bwindi.
